Women’s Day is an important date in the NCWO calendar, and as stated in its Constitution, is celebrated on 25 August every year. The aim is to increase public awareness of the role played by women and provide a platform for the gathering of women from diverse communities.
The first Women’s Day celebration was held at Stadium Merdeka in 1962. It was graced by the then Raja Permaisuri Agong, HRH Tuanku Tengku Budriah Tengku Ismail. Also present were the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tuanku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdul Razak.
On 25 August 2022 , The National Council of Malaysian Women’s Organizations (NCWO) celebrated 60th National Women’s Day with a Luncheon at Dewan Perdana Felda, Kuala Lumpur.
The theme is “The Courage of NCWO’s Trailblazers, an Inspiration for Women Today”.
Guest of Honor, Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah in her speech called for more female representation in the Cabinet.
Tunku Azizah reminded all that the voice of women is to be reckoned with and over the years, women have played an instrumental role in the development of the nation.
She also spoke on how women played the role of peacemakers.
Tunku Azizah added that Malaysia should not only empower women but also listen to the voices of women who are championing their rights.
From merely our house to generally the country, women can play their role in restoring peace whenever there is disorder.
Also present was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. In his speech Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri said despite accounting for almost half of 47.7 per cent of the entire population in the country as of 2020, women participation in the country’s labor force was at 55.5 per cent in 2021, as compared to Thailand with 66.8 per cent and Singapore 69.7 per cent.
To increase women participation in the labor work force, he said the government through the National Social Council would set up the gender local point and gender local team at each ministry and government agency .
The government recognizes the role of academic institutions, NGOs, the public sectors to continue empowering women in the country. The PM added that empowering women has always been the priority of the government and women should get better recognition for their role in the nations development.

Women’s Day is an important date in the NCWO calendar, as its Constitution states; To observe and organise Women’s Day each year on the 25th of August. The celebration take many forms including a grand luncheon or dinner with the Queen as Guest-of-Honour.
