Forum : December 10, 2022

The forum titled ‘Moving forward’ which was held at the Tamu Hotel & Suite, Kuala Lumpur and officiated by the Women, Family and Community Development Minister YB Datuk Seri Hajjah Nancy Shukri.

This forum is a platform to share experiences involving the ten candidates from various parties who contested in the 15th General Election (GE15) shared their challenges and experiences they faced in GE15.

Featured : 1. Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (BERSATU), 2. Datuk Seri Shahaniza Shamsuddin (UMNO), 3. Haniza Mohamed Talha (PBM), 4. Aiman Athirah Al-Jundi (AMANAH), 5. Gan Ay Ling (PKR), 6. Syerleena Abdul Rashid (DAP), 7. Ivone Low Yi Wen (MCA), 8. Siti Rahayu Baharin (MUDA), 9. Nurthaqaffah Nordin (AMANAH) dan 10. Siti Aisyah Shaik Ismail (PKR).

This forum is a follow up to the GE15 results that witnessed the percentage of women representation in the Parliament decreased from 14.9 per cent to 13.5 per cent.

The percentage for women in the Cabinet was 17.9 per cent also did not reach the target of at least 30 per cent of women in the decision-making role.

NCWO considered such percentage to be disappointing despite the consistent push from the women’s political party wings, women’s organisations and civil society.

Although there was an increase in the number of women candidates which was 127, involving 103 seats, only 23.6 per cent were successfully elected for the 30 Parliamentary seats.

In that regard NCWO believed that there was still a lot of effort needed to ensure that the political leadership opportunities favour the women adding that the cause of their defeats needed to be carefully studied to as to increase their winnability in the next election.
